Why Trail Certification Matters

Have you ever finished a run with your friend and compared GPS stats, only to find inconsistent distances or elevation gain? Have you ever done a race expecting an aid station at kilometer 10, only to find it several kilometers further?

This happens because most trails and races are not measured with a standardized method. That creates confusion, unfair results, and sometimes even safety risks.

The Metric Trails Approach

We designed a scientific certification process to ensure that every certified course meets three core principles:

Input quality: using validated GPS devices, in proper conditions
Process quality: applying strict and replicable measurement protocols
Output quality: delivering high-resolution, spatially accurate trail data

Levels of Certification

Level	Description
Bronze	Remote GIS validation. Anyone can submit a GPX file. We verify it against known standards.
Silver	Field measurement using a validated device with a verified Metric Score.
Gold	Measurement by a certified Metric Trails measurer, following official protocol.
Olympic	Gold + post-processing with high-resolution DEM or LiDAR elevation data.
